ANNIE-COLLAGEHer name is Annie Clark but some of you may know her as Fiona. She’s the new kid in school on the hit Canadian television show Degrassi the Next Generation. Fiona and her twin brother Declan are injecting some gossip girl appeal into life at Degrassi High. Fiona is a wealthy jet setting fashionista who has moved to Toronto from Europe and is ready to shake up her new scene with a little high fashion, snobbery and drama.

In real life Annie is far from the snobby, brooding character she plays in the show. What Annie and Fiona do have in common however is their love of fashion. Annie has a fresh youthful style, loving to dress up in Rag and Bone, Miu Miu and Marc Jacobs.

Inspired by Annie’s personal style, clowns and old movie stars from the 40s we pulled together our own fashion shoot this weekend.

The-Art-of-Writing-Notes-PhotoSitting in “Fashion and Society” class last week, I started daydreaming and doodling in my notebook. I wrote out “Hello Beautiful” in big curly script. On a whim I took a snap of it with my phone and sent it to one of my best friends who is currently studying at Queens’. She responded with a photo of “Hey Sunshine” written on lined paper and followed by a doodled sun. It seemed so personal to see Britt’s handwriting on that piece of paper, and I felt nostalgic for the days when letter writing and note passing were an every day occurrence. I realized that with the advancement of text messages, IM and email, the art of note passing has become obsolete.

Later that evening I reached far under my bed and pulled out my dusty memory box. When I opened it I found that it was overflowing with letters and notes on ripped out pages of Teen Vogue and scribbled across the back of worksheets of French verbs. Each note was covered in elaborate “milky” pen doodles and cut outs from magazines of cute boys and fancy stilettos. There were notes, birthday cards and plane letters from Lianne, Jillian, Shauna, Kirsten, Jacquie and Britt.

I sat on my bedroom floor smiling, thinking about grade nine, when the most important issues in our lives were shopping, crushes, and most of all each other.

Even though we have escaped our teenage years, our texts and wall posts are still about the best bag and the best boy at the party. They’re full of stories about mean girls and broken hearts. I take comfort in the fact that even though our girly jokes and confessions may soon be lost in cyberspace things haven’t changed as much as we may have anticipated, and they probably never will.

What the **** am I supposed to wear to a party that calls for 5:30? Will the look be post-work or pre-party? Red lipstick, purple lipstick, no lipstick?? Too many questions and too little time.

Looking out over Toronto from Merrill’s 45th floor apartment, I threw on a basic black dress, a knockout necklace made of watches by up and comer Michelle Ross, and sparkly tights. When I realized the tights looked more Arden than Dior Spring ’10, I peeled them off and substituted the classic black variety. Merrill opted for her Rag and Bone leather patch leggings, a Rogan sweater and her Acne shoe-boots that are reserved for events 2 hours or less.

When we walked into the Holt Renfrew LG Fashion week party at 5:45, we were happy with our decisions. We wouldn’t have picked any dressier or any less if we had the chance to do it all over. As Chris Sherman of Fashion Television said to me “ There is fashion for all tastes at these events.”

Every Toronto fashion celebrity was there from Jeannie Beker to Tommy Ton. We all mingled and drank wine until Barbara Atkin and Robin Kay introduced the mini fashion show celebrating Holt Renfrew’s picks of the Canadian design “Group of Seven.” My favourite super-star model Kate Somers, the toast of my former high school, opened the show in Lida Baday. After we all snapped pics and finished our last sips, it was time to call it a night. I was sad to go, but left looking forward to all the events to follow this week in Toronto.
